A comprehensive experience in anesthesia and perioperative care. Skills include BLS, airway management and drug administration. The operation room facilitates review of pulmonary/cardiovasacular physiology, pharmacology, acute/chronic pain, sedation and blood components. Psychological aspects for the adult, child and family are discussed.

140.01. Advanced Clinical Clerkship. (6 units) Su, Fa, Wi, Sp, SS1, SS2, SS3. Prerequisites: Anesthesia 110.

Four-week clerkship offering: Two weeks experience at Moffitt/Long OR providing anesthesia for pediatric, neuro, cardiac, and vascular surgery, two weeks experience at SFGH OR for trauma emergency surgery

140.03A. Advanced Intensive Care. (6 units) Su, Fa, Wi, Sp, SS1, SS2, SS3. Prerequisites: Anesthesia 110, Medicine 110, and Surgery 110.
J. Tang
Clinical clerkship on techniques of intensive care with primary emphasis on respiratory, cardiovascular, and renal pathophysiology. Patient population includes adult and pediatric patients with medical and surgical illnesses, a significant percentage of whom have been severely traumatized.

140.03B. Advanced Intensive Care. (6 units) Su, Fa, Wi, Sp, SS1, SS2, SS3. Prerequisites: Anesthesia 110, Medicine 110, Surgery 110 or consent of instructor.

The student will participate in the care of critically ill adults with a variety of medical and surgical conditions. The clerkship will integrate an understanding of respiratory, cardiovascular, cerebral and renal pathophysiology with diagnostic and therapeutic techniques required to care for patients with multisystem failure.

140.06. Pain Management. (6 units) Su, Fa, Wi, Sp, SS1, SS2, SS3. Prerequisites: None. Restrictions: Maximum one student per block.
T. Pham
This course in pain management allows students to participate in the assessment and treatment of patients with chronic pain. Lectures and rounds with multidisciplinary pain team comprise didactic portion, while inpatient/outpatient evaluations with faculty provide the clinical portion.

140.07. Advanced Anesthesia. (6-18 units) Wi, Sp. Seminar 3 hours.

This is a 12-week advanced elective in general anesthesia for participants in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery who are in the medical school phase of their integrated training program. It fulfills partial requirements for accreditation in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

This course is designed for students interested in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The clerkship views labor and delivery from the anesthesia perspective.

140.09. Perioperative Care. (6 units) Su, Fa, Wi, Sp, SS1, SS2, SS3. Prerequisites: Anesthesia 110, Medicine 110.

This course is designed for students interested in primary care and surgery. The student will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to care for primary patients throughout the perioperative period. Emphasis will be on pain management, perioperative coagulation issues and concerns unique to the geriatric patients.

140.10. Pediatric Anesthesia. (3 units) Su, Fa, Wi, Sp, SS1, SS2, SS3. Prerequisites: Anesthesia 110, Pediatrics 110. Restrictions: Thincluding preoperative evaluation and preparation, sedation management and monitoring, airway management, implications of common and rare pediatric disorders, management for painful procedures and options for remote locations and effective postoperative pain management.

140.11. Geriatric Anesthesia. (3 units) Fa, Wi, Sp. Prerequisites: Anesthesia 110 or an equivalent basic anesthesia clerkship at an outside institution. Restrictions: One student per two-week block. Conference 1 hours. Clinic 32 hours.
E. Huczko
Designed for students interested in the special needs and concerns of the elderly surgical patient. With a growing elderly population, students with diverse futures in medicine, intensive care, primary care, surgery, or anesthesia will all care for elderly surgical patients. Students will explore the issues that pertain to these patients through assisting in direct pre-op, intra-op and post-op anesthetic care.

150.01. Research in Anesthesia. (6-18 units) Su, Fa, Wi, Sp, SS1, SS2, SS3. Prerequisites: Anesthesia 110. Seminar 4 hours. Conference 1 hours. Library 5 hours. Project 30 hours.
S. Yost
Students conduct research projects under guidance of faculty member. Projects must be approved by instructor involved in supervising student. Students may initiate or become involved in established research programs under faculty guidance.

P. Bickler
A laboratory, clinical or field research project under direction of a member of the faculty with the approval of the chairperson of the department.

400. Anesthesia Staff Conference. (3 units) Su, Fa, Wi, Sp, SS1, SS2, SS3. Lecture 3 hours.

Course includes didactic lectures in sciences basic to the specialty of anesthesia, as well as case reviews, clinical discussions, and seminars on current medical literature in anesthesia.

450. Anesthesia Clinical Work. (1.5-18 units) Su, Fa, Wi, Sp. Patient Contact 10 hours.
M. Pardo
Residents are responsible for anesthetic care and management of patients in the operating rooms and outpatient departments, under immediate supervision of the staff. Preoperative and postoperative evaluation of patients, oxygen therapy, and resuscitation are covered.
