Students are taught to diagnose treatment plan patients who require basic rehabilitations and are taught to restore patient’s oral function, comfort, appearance and dental health using biocompatible substitutes. The student also learns to evaluate the patient’s prosthodontic needs to determine which patients they can treat and those which require referral to a specialist (Prosthodontist). This course is the clinical complement for all the didactic courses in oral and maxillofacial surgery. It is intended to provide students with clinical experiences in basic office oral surgery and exposure to hospital dentistry with emphasis on applicability to care of patients within the scope of practice of the general dentist. This course provides introductory preclinical, simulation and clinical experiences for dental students. Students learn patient examination and local anesthesia skills. They are assigned patients to evaluate, diagnose and treat; learn to create and maintain patient records; and practice universal precautions for infection control. Students will gain experience in orthodontic wire bending and learn to recognize simple clinical orthodontic tooth movement cases as experienced in the general dental practice. Students will perform laboratory exercises to simulate effective tooth movement. Fourth year dental students will provide comprehensive dental care at the Parnassus Dental Clinic for patients with moderate to advanced dental complexity. Students oversee the dental care for the patients assigned to them as they work towards competency as beginning general dentists. St. Joseph Dental Clinic is a community clinic providing preventive, comprehensive and emergency dental care primarily to children ages 2 to 17 from low income homes. All children are eligible for treatment regardless of the ability to pay. Students externs will have assistants and generally see 6 to 9 people per day and have one-on-one supervision. Treatments include extractions, pulpotomies, stainless steel crowns, space maintainers, amalgams, composites, sealants, ODTP, etc. ( department: PRV RS DEN )
