Each student will have a basic knowledge of the basic acupunction points, learn good needling technique for painlessly inserting acupuncture needles for dental and orofacial pain. Students will be taught safe placement of needles and how to prevent or manage complications.

Students will conduct oral screenings and evaluate patients with dental problems including toothache, oral pathology, dentofacial deformities, temporomandibular joint pathology, and preprosthetic problems. They will learn to give intraoral injections, perform intraoral biopsies, extract simple teeth and assist with more major surgical procedures.

This is an enrichment elective available to D4 and ID4 dental students who are in good standing and approaching graduation. This enrichment elective includes participation in implant lectures, seminars, clinical evaluation and preoperative planning, surgical implant procedures (functioning as assistant surgeon), follow-up care, stage 2 implant procedures, and preparation for prosthodontic care.

This course is designed to familiarize students with the techniques of history taking and the basic methods of physical examination. Practical experience in physical examination and historical interviews will be demonstratied in the hospital enviornment.

Relationships of gross anatomical structures of the head and neck are studied during laboratory dissections. Emphasis is placed on the correlations of cadaver dissection findings to diagnosis and on operating room surgery. Dissections will be approached as surgical procedures.
