Students will develop a durable framework for evaluating the health of children in all settings: ambulatory (both wellness and common illnesses), inpatient and newborn nursery. Students are expected to be an integral part of each team and be responsible for evaluating pediatric patients – not only taking histories and performing physical exams, but challenging themselves to interpret these findings, create differential diagnoses, and formulate diagnostic and therapeutic plans.

Students follow selected patients in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and participate in patient presentations, management conferences, and teaching rounds. Emphasis is on cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology in management of critically ill pediatric patients. Experience caring for sick and well children with 27,000 patient visits/year. Preventive medicine and anticipatory guidance along with principles of growth and development. This course will provide comprehensive exposure to pediatric plastic surgery, serving California’s growing Central Valley pediatric population. The primary focus of this elective is clinical. Interested students may pursue clinical research projects. This course does NOT include exposure to cosmetic surgery. Topics include: wound healing, maxillofacial trauma, craniofacial surgery, upper extremity/hand surgery, vascular anomalies, burn reconstruction and pediatric breast reconstructive surgery

Student will function as an 'acting intern' in a busy 34-bed PICU; will do every fourth night call with in-house attending intensivist. Teaching will be provided on a continuous basis during the week. Service has no fellows. While on this rotation, student will take a pre- and post-exam, follow curriculum and do an oral presentation at the end of course.

This advanced elective in Pediatric hematology/oncology will focus on the clinical care of children with cancer and blood disorders in the OUTPATIENT clinics, although there will be opportunity to participate in scheduled educational activities that are associated with hospitalized inpatients. Students will have the opportunity to evaluate new and existing patients in the Hematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant clinics.

This elective rotation for 3rd or 4th year medical students will cover basic areas of knowledge needed for child abuse consultation. The rotation will include: being on call for child abuse consult exams; involvement with ongoing cases in the medical or legal system; weekly lectures covering required reading on basic topics; visits with various agencies involved with child protection.

Students will round with the pediatric rehabilitation team, participate in transdisciplinary team conference and learn about the different therapeutic modalities. Experience will be gained in medical genetics, including dysmorphology, biomedical genetics and prenatal diagnosis. Community Regional Medical Center serves a delivery service of approximately 8,000 deliveries per year. Students will be integral members of the NICU team and will manage neonatal patients. This will include attending deliveries, participating in neonatal resuscitations, admitting newborns to the NICU, writing up H&Ps, writing orders and performing procedures.

140.42. Pediatric Dermatology - Fresno. (3-6 units) Su, Fa, Wi, Sp, SS1, SS2, SS3.

Two to three exposures to dermatology problems commonly seen in children in a large, free standing, rural pediatric hospital. Course offers high volume clinic population and opportunity to observe rare pediatric entities in outpatient as well as inpatient setting.

Students will be exposed to a broad spectrum of autoimmune, rheumatic and immune deficiency diseases, in addition to commonly encountered problems: arthralgia vs. arthritis, fever of unknown origin, the differential diagnosis of acute or chronic limb pain, monoarthritis and polyarthritis.

Pediatric Surgery represents a true general surgical experience and will provide students with a comprehensive exposure to treatment of surgical illness of infants and children. Specific topics include diabetes, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroid nodules, growth issues, precocious and delayed puberty, pituitary/hypothalamic abnormalities, hypocalcemia, hypoglycemia, vitamin D deficiency and/or rickets, adrenal abnormalities (such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia), Turner syndrome, and menstrual abnormal.
