110 Anesthesia Core Clerkship (3 units)

A comprehensive experience in anesthesia & perioperative care. Clinical skills include airway management, IV insertion, drug administration, physiologic monitoring, sedation and acute pain management. The OR facilitates review of pulmonary/cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology. Developing rapport, confidence, professionalism and communication are emphasized. 140.01 Advanced Clinical Clerkships (6 units)

Restrictions:4th year medical students.
Four-week clerkship offering: 1 week at Moffitt-Long hospitals, 1 week at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, & 2 weeks at San Francisco General Hospital. During their week at the VAMC students participate in a wide variety of cases including major cardiac and vascular surgery. Students two weeks at SFGH are split between 1 week of cases during the day & 1 week of overnight call. This experience allows students to participate in the care of the underserved & of trauma patients. (ANE PERIOP)

140.03A Advanced Intensive Care (6 units)

Clinical clerkship on techniques of intensive care with primary emphasis on respiratory, cardiovascular, and renal pathophysiology. Patient population includes adult and pediatric patients with medical and surgical illnesses, a significant percentage of whom have been severely traumatized. (ANE PERIOP)


140.03B Advanced Intensive Care (6 units)

The student will participate in the care of critically ill adults with a variety of medical and surgical conditions. The clerkship will integrate an understanding of respiratory, cardiovascular, cerebral and renal pathophysiology with diagnostic and therapeutic techniques required to care for patients with multisystem failure. This course in pain management allows students to participate in the assessment and treatment of patients with chronic pain. Lectures and rounds with multidisciplinary pain team comprise didactic portion, while inpatient/outpatient evaluations with faculty provide the clinical portion. (ANE PERIOP)

This course is designed for students interested in either Obstetrics/Gynecology or Anesthesia as it relates to Women's Health. The clerkship views labor & delivery from the anesthesia perspective, with emphasis on physiology, pharmacology & specific disease processes of pregnancy. The educational & skills objectives are defined by the principles & practice of obstetric anesthesia. The student's goal is to become a more knowledgeable, more skilled & more effective physician in an obstetric unit. Restrictions:4th year medical students.
Designed for students interested in primary care medicine or any surgical specialty. Students will develop knowledge & skills necessary to care for primary patients throughout the perioperative period. Emphasis will be on appropriate pre-operative evaluation, a glimpse of intra-operative management & following some patients into the post-operative arena. Examples of areas of focus will include perioperative cardiopulmonary risk assessment & coagulation issues along with postoperative pain mgmt. (ANE PERIOP)

This course is designed for students interested in Pediatrics. The clerkship incorporates issues of importance to the pediatrician, including preoperative evaluation and preparation, sedation management and monitoring, airway management, implications of common and rare pediatric disorders, management for painful procedures and options for remote locations and effective postoperaive pain management.
