This course presents a comprehensive introduction to the development and structure of the major components of the oral cavity. Basic concepts of the gross structure, histology, ultrastructure and physiology of teeth, periodontium, and soft and hard tissue structures will be presented from a descriptive developmental perspective and from the underlying cell and molecular biological perspective. This course presents a comprehensive introduction to risk assessment and diagnosis of dental diseases. The biological and clinical basis of bacterial plaque formation, microbial invasion, mineralization and demineralization of hard tissues, and pathways of inflammation will be presented, in addition to local and systemic modifiers of these processes. Finally the biological basis of diagnostic tests for oral diseases will be introduced. (CELL&TISBI)
