A hospital-based clinical experience on the Palliative Care Service (PCS) focused on the care of patients with serious, chronic and terminal illness emphasizing symptom management, communication, ethical issues, spiritual care and psychosocial support of patients and their families. Students will be assigned patients and round daily with the PCS team, and will visit with hospice patients at home and at inpatient hospice units.

Students will evaluate patients with malignant diseases under the supervision of oncology fellows and attending physicians. Students will see oncology patients in outpatient clinic and on the inpatient consultation service. In addition to a broad exposure to a wide range of malignant diseases, the students will be allowed to participate in the outpatient evaluation of patients with AIDS and Kaposi's sarcoma.

In addition, the course will provide students with many opportunities to practice and develop the ability ti read and evaluate ECGs.

The ICU service consults on, or cares for all of the medical patients in the ICU. There is a lecture series and a syllabus. There is formal instruction in ventilator management and in invasive procedures. this rotation allows students to become comfortable in caring for critically ill patients.

Through weekly lectures by different physicians from the UCSF Department of Medicine, students will be introduced to the nature of work of each of the various specialties. Students will meet every twwo weeks for two-hour evening sessions that combines both didactic and hands-on learning experiences re: the practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and conventional medicine. When possible, topics are case-based so that students can explopre how similar conditions are diagnosed and treated in TCM & conventional medicine. One faculty member from UCSF & one faculty member from the American College of TCM are present at each class.

In this course students will be introduced to techniques for evaluation & patient-centered care at the end of life with particular emphasis on care of the elderly. At the initial session, students will be paired with mentors based on their areas of interest: population-based (Spanish speakers), setting-specific (hospice, home care), or disease-specific (dementia, heart disease, cancer, etc.). Group discussions will follow each clinical session.

The course is the research component of the "Certificate Program in Biomedical Research", a program designed to encourage medical students to pursue full-time research for one year, along with prepartory studies beforehand and the completion of the M.D. with Thesis Program.
