The student will provide antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care of pregnant women, demonstrating competency on how to do a vaginal delivery under supervision. The student will participate in the operating room with ambulatory as well as major surgeries. The student will work with faculty preceptors and will demonstrate competency in the well woman exam, contraceptive counseling and osteoporosis counseling. (OB GYN R S)

Practical clinical training in obstetrics and gynecology at Valley Medical Center of Fresno. Time is divided between labor and delivery experience, gynecology ward, and obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinic. Clinical activities will include scrubbing in on cases in the OR, outpatient clinic once a week, attendance at Tumor Board weekly, and providing medical care for inpatient gynocologic cancer patients. The student will work in the outpatient Women's Options Center with residents, nurse practitioners and attending physicians to learn about the newest developments in contraceptive technology and abortion. The student will work with fellows and attendings in assessment and work-up of infertility and endocrine problems e.g. prolactinomas, polycystic ovarian disease, etc. Some time will be spent in the embryology lab, but most of the time will be spent with patients, including procedures such as vaginal ultrasound, ovum aspiration. This course will provide a fourth-year student with an in-depth experience in high-risk pregnancies under the direct supervision of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine faculty. Taking place in a 5,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art perinatal diagnostic center, this course will include hands-on experience in targeted ultrasound; vaginal ultrasound and Doppler studies. The student will participate in the management of a wide variety of maternal-fetal complications. (OB GYN R S)

Student will participate in ongoing reproductive health research projects with Dr. Walker at the Instituto Nacional de Salud Publica (12 hours per week) while attending Spanish language school 20 hours per week. Student will live with a family to facilitate language immersion and will volunteer in a clinic 4 hours per week. Student will become proficient in Spanish, apply knowledge gained from the elective in Latina Health to clinical situations. (OB GYN R S)

This ten-hour lecture series will focus on health issues of Latinas including reproductive health (infertility, contraception, perinatal issues), mental health, domestic violence, immigration issues, health care work force issues, alternative medicines/belief systems, chronic diseases (HIV, diabetes, obesity), pediatric issues, access issues to health care, and language challenges within the health system.
